Our Principal
Dr. Phillip Johnson
Dr. Phillip Johnson is a results-driven, student-centered principal in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and the incoming leader of Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School. He is known for building strong school cultures, coaching teachers with clarity, and using data to accelerate learning for every student.
Previously, Dr. Johnson led Marie G. Davis to historic academic performance, including exceeding growth and ranking among the state’s top schools for growth—evidence of a relentless focus on standards-aligned instruction, high-impact feedback, and meaningful family partnerships. His leadership centers on equity, high expectations, and making sure every adult action advances student success.
At MLK, Dr. Johnson’s 100-day entry plan prioritizes listening and learning with staff, students, and families; strengthening tiered academic and attendance supports; and aligning professional learning to proven practices (Get Better Faster and Teach Like a Champion). He believes great schools are built through consistent instruction, joyful culture, and tight follow-through.
Outside the office, Dr. Johnson is a proud community advocate and a lifelong learner who celebrates teamwork, growth, and the belief that every student can and will achieve at high levels.
